How To Go To The Dark Side – My Autumn Makeup Look

I have been sorting out my makeup bag for Autumn, swapping my corals and bronzer to berry colours and golds. This look is one of my all time favourite looks for the autumn and winter months. Wearing dark lipstick can be intimidating but pretty empowering, here is a quick guide on how I achieved this look…

I originally wanted to use a lip pencil to prevent the lipstick from “feathering” – which happens easily with dark lipsticks, but I love the colour so much I just skipped the lipstick and filled the area with my MAC lip pencil in Nightmoth. It’s a beautiful deep plum colour, doesn’t dry out your lips and is long lasting. For daytime, I use matte lips and in the evening I add wine coloured gloss for an even more dramatic look.

Tip: Prep your lips by exfoliating them to get a smooth base and to help the colour last longer. If your lips are chapped or flaking, then the dark pigments from the lipstick will settle into the dry patches – NOT a good look. Also, if you are new to wearing dark shades, why not use a sheer formula for a stained look without the intense pigmentation.

Because the lips are the main focus I wanted to keep the rest of my makeup simple. A tip is not to overdo it on the eye makeup. I simply sweeped Half Baked  & YDK  from Naked Palette 2 across the lids. I then used my Eyeko black eyeliner pen to draw a winged liner effect, and applied Ardell Demi Wispies lashes for full lashes.

Tip: Choose a light shimmery bronze or nude colours to play up the eyes without stealing focus from the lips.

I love strong brows for a defined look and I always use my Collection eyebrow kit in Brunette. It comes with a small brush and gel.

Tip: Keep eyebrows defined, the eyeliner clean and mascara (if you don’t want to wear false lashes) as this pairs well with dark lips.

Face and Cheeks

Flawless looking skin is a MUST for this look. If your skin has any blotchiness or redness (like me around my nose and chin) then dark lips will highlight this and you don’t get a “fresh” look, so it’s worth spending time perfecting your skin. I used my Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation as it gives good coverage and helps give me that even healthy complexion. Flawless skin helps the dark lip stand out as bolder, cleaner with more impact.

I add a little colour to the cheeks, using a pink blush from Collection BlushAndGlow palette to brighten up the face. Finally, I use a large brush to sweep a little YSL Sheer and Radiance Loose Powder all over the face to set the look.

Tip: If you find wearing foundation is too heavy for your skin, I sometimes use a BB cream or a tinted moisturiser with concealer to cover any redness, to get an even complexion. For setting your makeup, you can use any loose powder as this helps for a flawless finish.

I hope you find this useful and I would love to hear from you what your favourite Autumn look is.

Love Heather x
